Nobilis flower from spring to summer. They have a dense, compact head of 30 to 50 pendulous flowers. The leaf margins (edges of the foliage) are slightly serrated and the leaf apex is refuse and oblique (a characteristic notch at the end of the foliage). They are extremely slow growing from seed and take more than 8 years before flowering for a first time. In Australia, there is a clivia called Oz Nobilis. This is not a true Nobilis but is an interspecific cross between Nobilis and Miniata.
